Earlier this year, Democrats introduced to the Virginia General Assembly House Bill 972. This legislation prohibited courts from asking defendants their immigration status during the course of legal proceedings.
Migrant encounters at the US-Mexico border have skyrocketed during the Biden-Harris administration. By the end of 2023, MONTHLY encounters approached 250,000! Although Democrats maintain that illegal immigrants commit less crime than U.S. citizens, the fact is that a substantial number of crimes have been perpetrated by individuals who reside illegally in the United States. Three Virginia counties have already experienced the pain they’ve inflicted. In Loudoun County, Jose Aguilar-Martinez is charged with committing a carjacking that took the life of 54-year-old Melody Waldecker, a wife and grandmother who was visiting her mother in Sterling. After stealing her car, Aguilar-Martinez ran her over, killing her, and got into two car accidents as he sped away from the scene of the fatal hit and run. Ironically, this incident took place just inside the Loudoun County border where the Sheriff’s office readily cooperates with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Just 100 yards east lies Fairfax County, the first County in Virginia to end voluntary cooperation with ICE. Elsewhere, in Campbell County, illegal immigrant Hiuder Pedro Javier Sacul Caal will be tried for having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl. Investigator Mark Doyle at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office commented that reporting of crimes committed by illegal aliens is on the rise nationally. In Lynchburg Virginia, authorities charged an illegal immigrant, Isauro Garcia Cruz, with kidnapping, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and other crimes. His victim was a 15-year-old girl, herself an unaccompanied child from Honduras.
While American citizens are guaranteed the right of due process by the U.S. Constitution, illegals who commit crimes enjoy no such protection and are subject to the possibility of deportation. Virginia Democrats made it their priority to protect these illegal criminals from deportation by passing legislation prohibiting a court from inquiring as to the “immigration status of the defendant during any proceeding.” This applies in both misdemeanor AND felony cases. There is no purpose for such a prohibition other than to make it more difficult for officials to enforce immigration law. The bill was overwhelmingly supported by Democrats in the legislature, including Suhas Subramanyam. Fortunately, it was subsequently vetoed by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
The southern border is in crisis, criminals and drugs are pouring into the United States, and Virginians have directly suffered from the consequences of a weak Democratic immigration policy. Subramanyam is prioritizing illegal immigrants over the safety of his constituents illustrating a flagrant disregard for the rule of law.
Voting for Subramanyam for Congress means voting for a failed immigration policy and weakness on crime. Residents of the 10th District would be less safe with him as our Representative in Washington.
