On Monday, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order designating fentanyl as a weapon or mass destruction. This is the culmination of his fight against drug trafficking in his second term.
According to a White House Fact Sheet, the order directs Attorney-General Pam Bondi, to pursue criminal charges and sentence enhancements or variances for fentanyl cases. The order also instructs the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the Secretary for the Treasury Scott Bessent on taking action against financial institutions that are involved in the manufacture or distribution of illegal fentanyl.
Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristie Noem and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth are working together to enhance national security resources. They will also update their chemical response in order to address the fentanyl threats.
There’s no doubt the United States’ adversaries traffic fentanyl in part to kill Americans. Trump stated in the Oval Office that if this was a war it would be among the worst.
Trump said that Drug Traffickers killed anywhere between 200,000 to 300,000 Americans each year in the last five or six years. He then awarded a newly created Mexican Border Defense Medal for the efforts of 13 military members to secure the U.S. Southern Border.
Trump said: “That’s the reason today I am taking another step to protect Americans against the scourge that is deadly fentanyl flooding our country. I will sign this historic executive orders today.” “We are formally classified as weapons of mass destruction. That’s what we are.”
The president praised his efforts to reduce the amount fentanyl flowing into the U.S. This included browbeating China and Mexico, as well as Canada, into reducing the amount of drug being smuggled through the border.
Trump said, “We have also seen a 50% reduction in the amount and number of fentanyl being shipped. China has been working very closely with us to reduce the quantity and number of fentanyl being shipped.”
Trump said, “Fentanyl, you know, is bad when mixed with certain ingredients. But it is also very important in medicine, anesthesia and other things.” “I want to make sure people understand that fentanyl is not only used for bad things. “When it’s mixed, it can become bad. That’s what is happening in Mexico.”
The president claimed that the administration had also completed the biggest fentanyl bust ever in American history by “securing 3 million fentanyl tablets all at once.”
“And last months, we seized an additional 1.7 million fentanyl tablets in the state Colorado. The poorly run state Colorado with a governor that’s incompetent,” Trump criticized Gov. Jared Polis, D-CO.
Trump hinted that marijuana could be classified under his administration. “A lot people want it, the classification, because it leads tremendous amounts of research, which can’t be conducted unless you do a reclassification. So we are looking very strongly at that.”
