“I am happy to inform the many U.S.A. Patriots of my designation of ANTIFA as a MAJOR TERRORIST ENTITY. I will also strongly recommend that those who fund ANTIFA are thoroughly investigated according to the highest legal standards.
Antifa has been classified as a group and not a particular movement. It is unclear how Trump plans to carry out the order.
Trump declared antifa as a terrorist group during his first term in office as president, May 2020. He said this week he would do it again following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In response to a reporter’s question, Trump said on Monday that he would “absolutely” do it. “I’ve also been talking to the attorney about bringing RICO against people who have put up millions and millions for agitation.”
Declaring antifa a terrorist group could allow Trump the ability to freeze assets or funding sources of groups connected with antifa.
After Kirk’s murder last week, the president said his administration would target groups on the “radical left”.
“My administration will find all those who have contributed to this atrocity, as well those who fund and support political violence. This includes those organizations who fund and support them, as they go after our law enforcement officials and judges who bring order to our nation,” he added, referring to the assassination attempt against him and House Majority leader Steve Scalise, (R-LA), as well as the assassination attempt on UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Tyler Robinson, the alleged Kirk shooter, wrote “Bella Ciao”, a song title on an unfired casing. After World War II, the song became a popular anti-fascist tune in Italy.
Robinson’s membership in the antifa group is not clear.
