Virginia Announces $14.4 Million in Land Conservation Grants

Published on

RICHMOND, VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced $14.4 million in Virginia Land Conservation Foundation funding to conserve 11,220 acres around the Commonwealth.

The 28 projects receiving grant awards for fiscal year 2025 include investments in new parks for the public, conservation easements to protect working timberland and farmland and two land acquisitions by Virginia’s Tribal Nations.

“We take pride in sharing the rich beauty of Virginia’s natural resources and historical places and remain committed to increasing public access so more Virginians can enjoy them,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Our parks, open spaces and other vital outdoor recreation assets drive tourism and economic growth, and they provide residents a place to connect with nature. Supporting Virginians so they can continue to work their farmlands and forests helps our key agriculture and forestry sectors continue to thrive.”

Grants were awarded in the following categories: farmland preservation, forest preservation, historic preservation, natural area protection, and open spaces and parks.

“By making significant investments that not only protect natural resources, but also our historic resources, we are able to ensure that Virginians can benefit from visiting these special places,” said Virginia Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Travis Voyles. “When we increase public access opportunities, we allow Virginians and those visiting to experience all that the Commonwealth has to offer.”

“These projects selected for VLCF grant funding will help protect ecologically important habitats around the Commonwealth that support rare plant species as well as a variety of wildlife,” said Director of the Department of Conservation and Recreation Matthew Wells. “Virginians will benefit from the improved water quality of our rivers, creeks and karst landscapes resulting from these strategically targeted land conservation projects.”

VLCF board members are appointed by the governor, the Senate and the House of Delegates. The board includes the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry. DCR provides staff support to the board.

A full list of the fiscal year 2025 VLCF Awards can be found here:

Acquisition of 1,900 acres of contiguous forest in the Albemarle-Pamlico watershed region, which includes nearly 250 acres of freshwater wetlands and 10 miles of stream reaches. Virginia Beach

City of Virginia Beach, Hancock North Landing Open Space FY25 | $650,000

Acquisition of 28 acres as an addition to Munden Point Park. From the site, there are over 220-degree views of the North Landing River, a designated Virginia Scenic River. Acquisition of 0.57 acres at Pleasure House Point, part of a network of conserved areas along Crab Creek, Pleasure House Creek and Lynnhaven Bay. The complex includes 1.25 miles of shorelines and wetlands, tidal mudflats and maritime forests. In 2012, a significant portion of the property was conserved, and the City of Virginia Beach currently manages 108 acres of the property.

Warren County

The property also contains 1.6 miles of perennial streams and supports habitat for species of greatest conservation need. A grant for $182,000 was awarded for this project for FY23 but the cost for the required boundary survey for this exceptionally mountainous property was unexpectedly high.

At this dangerous time for Virginia

We hope you appreciated this article. Before you close this tab, we want to ask if you could support Red Virginia News at this dangerous time for journalism in Virginia and across the nation.

Under one-party Democratic rule—with Governor Abigail Spanberger in the Executive Mansion, Lt. Governor Ghazala Hashmi, Attorney General Jay Jones, House Speaker Don Scott, and Democrat majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly—Virginia families are seeing the steady erosion of transparency, accountability, and fair reporting. Progressive pressure from the statehouse has fueled a chilling environment for independent conservative voices: selective enforcement, regulatory threats against dissenting outlets, and a mainstream media echo chamber that too often acts as a PR arm for the ruling Democrats.

Meanwhile, institutions that should serve the public have been weaponized or pressured to favor one side. Corporate media owners and billionaire-backed outlets frequently bend the knee to appease powerful Democratic interests, while independent conservative journalism faces marginalization, advertiser boycotts, and outright censorship attempts.

Democracy is best served by a robust, thriving free press that holds all leaders accountable—not one that shields Governor Spanberger, Speaker Scott, and their legislative allies from scrutiny. Owned by neither billionaires nor coastal corporations, Red Virginia News remains dedicated to covering this Democratic trifecta with uncompromising truth and a Virginia-first perspective—delivering hard-hitting, paywall-free reporting that the legacy media too often ignores or suppresses.

Despite the risks of maintaining our fierce independence in a state dominated by one-party Democratic control, what sustains us—and fills us with deep gratitude—is the unwavering support we’ve seen from patriotic Virginia readers. It is no exaggeration to say that we are here because of you: a majority of our funding comes directly from people like you responding to messages like this. Your support not only powers our work, but more importantly, it safeguards the financial independence that underpins our editorial courage to speak truth to power in Richmond.

We know our requests for support are not as welcome as our reporting, but without them, it’s simple: our reporting wouldn’t exist. Of course, we understand that some readers are not in a position to support us financially right now, and if that is you, we value your readership no less.

But if you are able, please support us today. All gifts are gratefully received, but a recurring contribution is most impactful, helping sustain our watchdog journalism throughout the year ahead (and among the great benefits, we’ll show you far fewer fundraising requests like this). It takes just moments to give. Thank you for protecting conservative journalism and the free press in Virginia.
