Many Virginians may be unaware of how expansive Virginia’s abortion rights currently are. Abortions are legal in Virginia up to 26 weeks and 6 days, the start of the third trimester of pregnancy. In fact, an abortion may even be legally performed after this timeframe when the mother’s physical or mental health is in danger.Nonetheless, Democrat Suhas Subramanyam’s campaign page brags about being a force “to expand abortion rights.” But, is this what Virginians want?
In 2023, left-leaning National Public Radio asked Americans up to what point abortion should be allowed. Two-thirds of respondents agreed that abortion should be restricted to the first three months of pregnancy. The first three months of pregnancy equals 12 weeks. Again, in Virginia, abortion is already legal up to 26 weeks and 6 days.
Either Subramanyam is unaware of his constituents’ preferences, has chosen to ignore them, or is simply lying to Virginians about his abortion position. The truth is that HJ 519, the legislation Subramanyam cosponsored to amend Virginia’s Constitution, has zero restrictions on abortion. Zero. In short, the bill “Provides that every individual has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom and that the right to make and effectuate one’s own decisions about all matters related to one’s pregnancy cannot be denied, burdened, or otherwise infringed upon by the Commonwealth …” This legislation makes no mention of 26 weeks and 6 days, or unlimited abortion when the health of the mother is at risk. It simply plows ahead, blindly ignoring current law and the will of the people.
Shockingly, Subramanyam even opposed humanitarian legislation that would have ensured medical care for a “born alive” baby after a botched abortion attempt. And, he voted against a bill designed to inform a woman of the alternatives to abortion and about services to assist her throughout her pregnancy and childbirth. A more apt campaign slogan for Subramanyam might be “Abortion-Only Provided Here” or “Children for Me, but Not for Thee.”
Unlimited abortion rights, refusal to save the life of a baby who survives an abortion attempt, and suppression of information on alternatives to abortion. Make no mistake. Suhas Subramanyam represents that dark portion of the Democratic party that embraces a culture of death. He must not win this November.
