On January 14, Representative Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), in one of his first acts as the new Congressman for VA-10, voted against protecting women and girls in sports across the country.
The bill, The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, was sponsored by Representative Greg Steube (R-FL), and passed on a bi-partisan vote. The bill ensures that only biological females compete against other biological females in women’s sports programs operated, sponsored, or facilitated by recipients of federal funding.
By voting “no” on this bill, Subramanyam aligned himself with the “squad” far-left Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who also voted no. Ocasio-Cortez even bemoaned the fact that it was a bi-partisan vote, telling The Independent, “…if a little bitty sports bill was gonna make Dems defect, we’re not in good shape.”
Subramanyam hasn’t yet been pushed to defend his vote or explain why he voted to let boys play in girls’ sports, taking future opportunities away from girls who are left at a disadvantage, and even seriously injured.
Subramanyam’s office can be reached at 202-225-5136, should readers wish to advise
him of their thoughts on the potential injuries, invasion of privacy, or disregard for women’s feelings and struggles his “no” vote signifies.
Subramanyam has two daughters, Maya and Nina pictured above, yet he voted against their future opportunities and security. With his vote, he has shown a callous disregard for the lifelong struggle women face to protect their spaces and ensure their own safety. Fortunately, the Republicans in Congress are there to protect his daughters where he is unable to.
The bill now advances to the Senate, where, despite a Republican majority, it will require Democrat support for passage.
