Virginia Consumer Sentiment Falls Sharply in August Poll
Virginia consumer sentiment fell sharply in August, erasing earlier modest gains as inflation and a cooling labor market pressured household finances, according to a Roanoke College poll highlighted by Virginia Mercury.
The Virginia Index of Consumer Sentiment dropped to 59.6, down 7.8 points from February and 4.9 points from a year earlier. The overall index and its current-conditions and expectations components now sit below their five-year average of 68.1.
Pollsters linked the slide to renewed price pressures and weaker employment signals. The reading offers a statewide snapshot of household confidence as energy costs and broader economic debates dominate Virginia politics.
