Legislators Steer 32.8 Million Toward Richmond Water Reliability After Regional Failures

State budget amendments from Del. Betsy Carr and Sen. Michael Jones underwrote a $32.8 million grant package for Richmond's water treatment plant filters, Richmond BizSense reported, after the new Richmond Regional Water Workgroup signed off.

The award tops a $20 million baseline and funds media replacement for 22 filters plus structural and electrical upgrades meant to stabilize clean-water flow for Richmond and partner counties. The legislature created the workgroup to guide state investment with the Virginia Department of Health and Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico.

Regional leaders have faced intense scrutiny after recent water outages and boil-water crises. The larger state commitment is being cast as both infrastructure fix and accountability measure for a system that failed customers across jurisdictional lines.
