Henrico Speed Camera Plan Sparks Privacy Questions Alongside Safety Push

Henrico's unanimous speed-camera vote came with pointed questions about surveillance and whether technology alone can fix roads where children have already died, the Henrico Citizen reported.

Resident Michael Keegan asked whether images could be misused or tied to Flock Safety systems. Chief Eric English said the LIDAR vendors are separate, only speeding vehicles are photographed, and unused images delete after 21 days. English also pledged annual public reports on violation counts and effectiveness.

Victoria Crawley, who lives near Henrico High, supported cameras but said Azalea Avenue still needs crossing help after she heard a fatal 2024 crash outside her home. Supervisors want talks with the School Board about extending flashing-zone hours to big evening events.

The debate previews a wider Virginia fight over automated enforcement tools as localities expand cameras while others scrap license-plate networks.
