Fairfax Prosecutor Steve Descano Faces Expanded House Judiciary Subpoena Push

Lawyers for Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano say the House Judiciary Committee plans to subpoena him this week and widen its inquiry past immigration issues, WTOP reported.

According to their letter, staff are seeking information about prosecutorial decisions in individual cases, including matters that were nolle prossed, regardless of a defendant's immigration status. Descano appeared before a House immigration subcommittee in May and rejected claims that Fairfax runs sanctuary policies.

Congressional attention has also focused on the February 2026 killing of Stephanie Minter in Hybla Valley; Abdul Jalloh is charged and awaiting trial. The Justice Department opened a civil-rights investigation in May into whether Descano's office violated rules barring discrimination by federal-funding recipients.

Descano's attorneys argue the expanded document demands stray from legitimate oversight of federal immigration enforcement.
