Fairfax Flock Pause Leaves 84 Cameras Rolling While Privacy Advocates Cry Delay

Fairfax supervisors paused only new Flock installs Sept. 15, leaving 84 roadside readers active while privacy groups demand a full ban.

Chair Jeff McKay framed the cameras as solving 1,600-plus cases and sent Flock a questionnaire on data control, ICE-related searches and AI tools. DeFlock Fairfax called the pause performative because no new cameras were scheduled and data remains shareable with 160-plus agencies under current settings.

The Safety and Security Committee takes the file Oct. 20. School Board member Kyle McDaniel still plans a Sept. 24 motion barring ALPRs on school land.

Northern Virginia’s split is widening: Arlington ordered removal the same day, while Fairfax opted for study first.
