Fairfax Crossing Guard Fight Exposes Budget Cut Fallout and Board School Tensions

Fairfax's unanimous vote to restore high school crossing guards came with sharp accountability questions about why the board cut $1.89 million in coverage earlier and waited for injuries to reverse course, FFXnow reported.

Supervisors Pat Herrity and Rodney Lusk said the county would not be in the crisis if the April markup and May budget votes had not eliminated the posts. School Board member Melanie Meren accused supervisors of defending a dangerous status quo and cited an insulting text from Chairman Jeff McKay during the spring budget fight.

Parents complained they waited more than two hours to speak while other agenda items proceeded. Several school board members thanked the carryover fix but demanded permanent funding so coverage does not vanish in the next budget cycle.

A new joint working group is supposed to bring infrastructure and Safe Routes ideas back for fiscal year 2028 — a test of whether collaboration replaces annual brinkmanship.
