Dominion Pitches New Downtown Richmond Office Tower to Support NextEra Merger
Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy said they would construct a new office tower at 701 E. Cary St. in downtown Richmond, the gravel lot where Dominion's former tower was imploded in 2020, if their proposed $67 billion merger wins approval.
The companies described the building as part of a combined co-headquarters next to Dominion's 600 Canal Place tower. A released rendering closely matches Dominion's earlier scrapped sister-tower concept, previously described as about 17 stories and 900,000 square feet.
Dominion abandoned prior tower plans in 2021 and later floated other uses for the two-acre parcel. The merger still requires State Corporation Commission and other regulatory approvals. NextEra would acquire Dominion while both firms say Dominion would remain locally led.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger has intervened in the case seeking affordability, worker protections and clean-energy progress. Richmond Mayor Danny Avula called the latest promises encouraging and said the city will keep monitoring the process for residents' interests.
