The Democratic party’s implosion on the national stage in recent years has been well-documented–extreme positions, tone-deaf policies, and a refusal to engage with dissenting voices have alienated millions. While Washington is in the spotlight, there has been a silent disaster unfolding in Northern Virginia. Local Democrats such as Delegate Holly Seibold, D-12, embody the same failings that have undermined trust in the Democratic party. Seibold, who represents parts of Fairfax County in Richmond, has become a poster child for the Democrats’ inability to address pressing local concerns–particularly the controversial transgender policies in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)–while pushing divisive agendas that leave constituents frustrated and ignored.
Seibold was elected in 2023, promising a better future for Virginian families, as well as a promise of affordability and rights protection. Her tenure has been marked with a disturbing disconnect from the issues that plague Northern Virginia. This is most evident in Fairfax County schools where the Democratic-backed leadership has redoubled its efforts to implement radical transgender policy despite increasing public opposition. Seibold is a scapegoat for the failures of her own party, as parents and taxpayers have expressed their anger.
Consider the ongoing U.S. Department of Education’s investigation of FCPS and other Northern Virginia schools districts that was launched in February. The investigation focuses on policies that allow transgender students use restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. Critics argue these policies violate Title IX, and put ideology before safety. Fairfax County’s Democrat-controlled school board has defended these policies despite incidents such as the January incident of a transgender registered sex criminal exposing himself allegedly in a girls locker room at Washington Liberty High School, located in Arlington. Seibold’s response has been non-existent. The fallout from the incident has spread to Fairfax County, where similar policies are still in place. Seibold’s inaction is a reflection of the tendency for national Democrats to avoid tough questions about transgender issues and leave families to their own devices.
It’s not just about the bathrooms. This is about a larger pattern of Democratic overreach at Fairfax County Schools. FCPS, under the leadership of Superintendent Michelle Reid, and a board that is backed by Seibold, has been pushing gender ideology in classrooms, at an increasingly younger age, without parental consent. Local Democrats, like Seibold, seem to be unaware of the public’s dissatisfaction with these actions. She’s spent more time railing against the proposed Tysons Casino than addressing constituents concerns. While this is a divisive distraction, it pales in comparison with parents’ daily struggles to navigate a school system that they believe has been hijacked. Seibold’s letter to Patch in February criticizing the casino project is a classic example of missing the forest for trees. This trait is all too familiar to those who have watched the Democratic Party struggle nationally.
There’s also the budget mess. Fairfax County officials proposed recently to cut $60 million from spending, which included eliminating high school crossingguards, and raise property taxes. This move has sparked outrage in residents who are already struggling. Seibold has been conspicuously silent as local allies of her party squeeze taxpayers for funding their priorities. It’s a microcosm for the Democrats’ failure at the national level: they promise relief, but deliver burdens while ignoring those who claim to be their representatives.
Seibold’s alignment to this agenda is not just a failure on his part, it’s also a sign of the Democratic Party in Northern Virginia’s decline. Seibold, who is a willing accomplice to the extremists that destroyed the credibility of the Democratic Party on issues such as transgender rights and culture at the federal levels, has firmly established herself in Fairfax County. Seibold’s refusal to speak out against the radicalism of the Fairfax County school board or to advocate for practical solutions is a reflection of the arrogance which cost Democrats in the elections of 2024. The party’s obsession for progressive purity has alienated moderates. Locally, Seibold’s inaction leaves Northern Virginians wondering who is actually fighting for them.
Fairfax County voters aren’t stupid. Seibold is not doing much to address the problems in the schools, rising taxes and safety concerns. Her tenure serves as a reminder that the Democratic Party’s failures do not stop within the Beltway. Holly Seibold is a shining example of how the Democratic party has lost its way in Northern Virginia.
